As summer temperatures start creeping up across the US, it’s a reminder that our annual pilgrimage to DEF CON is right around the corner. Although we attend the conference each year, it’s good to pause for a moment and ask what attracts us to this gathering.
For those who are unfamiliar, DEF CON is an annual event that brings together security professionals, hackers, researchers, and enthusiasts from all over the globe. The name DEF CON is derived from the term “Defense Condition,” a measure of the readiness, or alert status, used by the U.S. Armed Forces. Since its inception in 1993, the conference has been a melting pot of ideas, techniques, and trends in the realm of cybersecurity.
Central to our interest in DEF CON is our commitment to our company and our clients that we will stay at the forefront of knowledge and innovation in the cybersecurity space. It’s an ethos that is embedded in the DNA of our company. These practical workshops are a lot of fun, helping us broaden our knowledge across diverse areas. In 2022, members of our team enjoyed hacking cars, learning about ham radio, and practicing their soldering skills.

Beyond the tangible, technical benefits, my favorite benefit of attending DEF CON is the opportunities for team building. We are a remote company with employees spread around the world. The opportunities for catching up in a face-to-face setting are limited, and what a better place to do it then in hacker heaven. In addition, the conference offers a refreshing change of pace from the everyday work environment, reigniting the passion and excitement that brought us into the cybersecurity field in the first place. The shared experience of traveling, learning, and growing together serves as a powerful team-building exercise, fostering a sense of camaraderie that strengthens our unity and boosts overall team morale.
In summary, we are looking forward to another trip to Vegas in 2023. Participating in DEF CON is a clear indication of our commitment to staying at the forefront of the cybersecurity field.
